Samsung PN63C550 63-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV (Black) User Review

We had been looking for a TV to replace the ‘08 Samsung LN52A650 52″ LCD which is a great TV that does everything exceptionally well *except* sports where there is noticeable blurring. Since plasmas have a 600 Hz refresh rate compared to 240HZ for the best LED/LCDs, we decided to go back to plasma.

I checked out some reviews and narrowed it down to about 10 TVs in the 60-65″ range and went to BB to look at them. They had the PN58C550 on display and it looked fantastic. I asked two different salesman what they thought of it. One said Samsung made the best plasmas and that plasmas offered the most realistic color. A different salesman said he just bought the PN63C550 and loved it. I asked him why and he said he’d been in the business for 17 years and he thought this was the best TV out there for the price.

I checked Consumer Reports and they rate the PN63C550 (along with the LG Infinia 60PK950) as the #1 TV of all plasmas and LED/LCDs with a score of 81. With that, we ordered it on a Fri and it was delivered the following Wed. The CEVA delivery was as promised. The box is huge as another reviewer said.

The picture is stunning right out of the box with no blurring during sports. The picture with a blu-ray player is equally impressive. I tried about 5 different blu-ray movies through it and can’t see any difference between this TV and our ‘08 LCD with blu-ray (which is a good thing). After watching about 8 hours of football on Sunday on this TV, it was barely warm on the front and at the vents in back…I would estimate 90 degrees. There is no buzzing at all on this TV, even with the volume muted and standing inches away from it. Standard def picture seems about the same as other HDTVs, nothing special.

Overall, I highly recommend this TV and would buy it again. I’ve also included a picture of the TV in the Customer Images section entitled “Picture with DirecTV.”

Well Sony is always is the at the top of quality and engineering over the years, and this 46HD is everything it should be for the money. I was making the move from regular TV to a HD, spent some time in various Best Buys, which have professional and smart people to inform you whats new, what bad and whats best.

I watch more TV now that I am a tad older, 50, and normally watch F1 Racing, MotoGP, Baseball, Football (Cubs/Bears) and some HBO. But my wife enjoys DVD/Blue ray running the Gambit, so we decided it time to enjoy that format on a TV that more realistic for a movie, boy, this baby is the bomb.

I got a regular Sony Blue Ray for 0 too, and put the ethernet to my router, and we have Net Flix on demand too, via our Que, and also You Tube and a Style.com (fashion shows/collections), with Hulu coming soon.

The set up was a few minutes, the HDMI cords are great as no guessing and tons of wires, and I plugged in my Video/Audio my Denon reciever/amp and have stereo too. The speakers on the TV are very good, why people complain about them I have no idea.

I chose LCD over LED as I figure its still has a few generations to go to be better, and the cost is was too much for my needs. I enjoy nice things in life, I own a Triumph Sprint ST motorcycle, and a BMW twin turbo 335i coupe six speed, and love designer clothes from Italy. This TV is a great value purchase. I also got the 4 year warranty.

So, the entire package, TV 9, BlueRay 0, 2 HDMI Cables , Warranty 0, Ethernet cord , tax 0, was 00. I wanted a TV around 0, but justified the 50% increase on the quality.

LG BD590 250GB HD Network Blu-ray Disc Player User Review

I purchased the Vizio blu-ray with built in networking first, and was so deeply disappointed in it that I returned it and bought this one instead. The difference in the quality of implementation is striking, I would rate this unit with 5 stars, whereas the Vizio one is between one and two stars.

I had to set up the wireless networking once, and have never had to worry about it again. When I do something that uses the wireless networking it just works. This is what I’m used to with my networking devices, and what I would expect any halfway decent player to do.

One of the first things I did after setting up the wireless networking was to have the system update itself. A couple of button clicks later and the device happily downloaded and installed the latest firmware.

So far I’ve used the Netflix service a lot on it, and played a bunch of discs. Everything I’ve tried has been smooth and easy, though I have not tried the Vudu or MLB apps.

The unit is hooked up to a 1080P 50″ plasma, and the picture is quite sharp and fast.

VIZIO XVT423SV 42-Inch Full HD 1080p LED LCD HDTV with VIA Internet Application, Black User Review

I got this TV because it has features that are more commonly found in much more expensive TV’s, and the one expert review out there said very good things. In particular I wanted the dimming (non-edge) LED lighting and the ambient room sensor (except I’ve ended up turning that off, oh well), and I didn’t need to pay more to get thinner than 3″. Another price note to Amazon: you’re being undersold! I paid 8 at Sam’s Club, and just saw that it’s now being sold by [...] at 9.

I’m happy with the image. A review has suggested that it looks bad when viewing it from the side, which is the main reason why we went to see it in person before buying. Like any other LCD it’s not as good as a plasma screen–which wouldn’t work in our window-filled room–but I don’t think it’s at all bad.

Even better, it’s doing well with tennis! We watched the first day of the US Open on someone else’s HDTV and noticed that the tennis ball’s fast movement across the court looked noticeably jagged. We set this TV up on the second day, and it looks smooth (and that’s with the dejugger/smoothing settings set to low).

I also like the looks of the TV. One expert review calls them “generic,” but I want a TV to fit with my house, not vice versa. The matte screen means it doesn’t reflect, which is great for the picture when it is on and for the room as a whole when it is off (less noticeable). Another reviewer noted that the VIZIO name stays orange when it’s on standby/off. I find this more annoying in principle than in impact. Still, I’m *almost* tempted to go get some black electrical tape…

The setup was easy: it connected to our wireless without problem, programming the remotes was easy, etc. The 5 HDMI connectors are generous. Right now we’re using 2 HDMI’s (TiVo and computer), the component & RCA (DVD) and the RCA sound out. Someday we’ll replace the older components and go to all HDMI/digital sound, I assume. I look forward to the promised software updates that will allow streaming through wireless and/or the USB ports!

I haven’t tried out the internet widgets (I don’t really care), and since we haven’t gotten a high-def DVD player yet, I don’t know how it does with film’s 1080p/24 output. I haven’t had any problems with smells.

LG 50PS80 50-Inch 1080p Plasma Broadband HDTV User Review

I purchased this TV during the pre-christmas sales in early November 2009 for a great price (9). I was originally going to the store to purchase the Panasonic P50G15. However, the Sales Associate convinced me to buy the LG – it was the best TV for the price (the P50G15 was 99 which included a blu ray player vs. 9 for the 50PS80). With Pioneer out of the market the Panasonic Plasma’s are considered the best picture quality available. However, comparing the LG P580 vs. the Panasonic G15 is comparing LG’s top of the line model against a high end Panny, but not their best (V10 series). The following features gave the LG a slight edge for the price:

1. The LG PS80 utilizes a single pane of glass (The Panasonic G15 is two panes… the Panasonic V10 is also one pane). This reduces the glare in a bright room. My set is in a room with a huge Bay window. The glare is not that noticible. On particulary bright days I close the blinds. I also have a big ceiling light that hangs down directly behind the viewer. If the light is on the fullest setting, you know its there… but if you dim the light you don’t notice it. Another trick I learned is to swivel the tv so you aren’t perpindicular to the screen. THe light behind the screen no longer is reflected back at the viewer. With the plasma the viewing angle is superb… so with a slight viewing angle the picture is perfect and there is no glare.

2. The tv stand swivels. If you are buying a wall mount or a entertainment center that has a mount that swivels this doesn’t matter. However, if you are just putting the tv with its default stand on an entertainment center the swivels is very useful. Especially for when I use a nintendo wii…. I can turn the screen so its facing away from my coffee table and I can play active games on the wii. As mentioned above… sometimes I swivel the set slightly to eliminate any glare from behind the viewer.

3. The LG PS80 supports 24P Cinematic Playback. I’m not 100% educated in this feature… theoretically this means that vidoes filmed at 24 frames per second will play smoother on the LG PS80 than sets that don’t have 24P capable (I don’t believe the P50G15 does, though the V10 definitely does). The CNET reviews say that the LG software isn’t as consistent as the top-of-the-line competitors (like the Panasonic V10), but thusfar every movie i have watched looks amazing… and is smooth without any noticible artifacts / ghosting / etc.

4. The I/O ports are slightly different… there is 1 more HDMI on the LG. There is not an S-Video on the LG. Though with all of the HDMI and Component Video options I have no need to ever use S-Video… I would rather have the 4 HDMI’s. The I/0 on the side of the set is also very useful.

The reviews from sites like CNET knock the picture quality of the PS80 because of the black levels. My father owns the last generation of the Pioneer Elite Kuro’s, which are known to have some of the best black levels ever… and I can honestly say that once you calibrate the picture settings on the LG… the Picture Quality (PQ) is stunning… and comparible to the older Pioneer. The black levels of the LG are significantly better than most if not all of the LCD’s on the market… my friend brought one of the top of the line Samsung LCD’s during Christmas 2008 (00 vs. 9) and this LG blows the picture quality away.

The bells and whistles that the NetCast provides are pretty cool, though not necessary. The NetFlix feature is great and very convenient (G15 has ethernet but not Netflix). One push of the button on the remote brings you to the NetFlix menu… you scroll through your movies… and make a selection. Works great… with pretty good picture quality (supposedly its 720P). If you have an XBOX 360 (like I do) or other NetFlix enabled devices this isn’t necessary in the TV… however it is convenient to have it in one push of the button… saves time. The Yahoo widgets I find fairly useless. I do use the Weather one frequently… which is pretty cool. Its useful to know the temperature forcast and whether or not you will have a storm… though its frustrating that you can’t tell how much snow you will get (i.e. 4″ to 6″ of snow). The sports scores are pretty useful as well… but easier to do on a laptop… and I notice that some of them don’t update too often.

One knock on the LG PS80 is that I have notice some level of temporary image retention (i.e. burn-in) especially during the first few weeks of using it (break-in period). Menu systems (especially ones like selecting a movie with the VUDU widget) would leave a light images on the screen of the menu when the screen displays something dark or goes black. However, with a little bit of time they always go away. The tv also has “ISM” methods that you can use to “wash” the screen… completely removing the retention in a few seconds. Now that my tv is “broken-in” it rarely happens anymore. I have used my XBOX 360 and Nintendo Wii a lot and have had no issues.

If you have a 50″ tv you most likely have a receiver with surround sound… so speaker quality probably won’t matter too much to most people. However, it should be pointed out that the sound quality of the LG 50PS80 speakers is suprisingly good. Great depth of sound… good amplification… and the sound is sharp and clear. It also has an optional “ClearVoice” mode which amplifies the sound of human voices so you can pick them out better from the sound effects / background noise. I played with this setting… thought it was neat… but leave it turned off. If you are hard of hearing it may be beneficial.

This review is getting long winded… so I won’t write much more. The big thing I would recommend is calibrating the picture settings… this is true of any TV you buy. The default settings (Vivid Mode) look like crap at home. The tv has a simple calibration mode built into the menu system… this will get you started. Take time to learn how to set the ISF Expert modes. I bought a calibration disk which worked pretty well. Another option is to try the settings recommended by CNET. I started with those… and the difference in picture quality is night & day. Every tv will vary slightly so their recommended settings won’t give you a perfect calibration… but its a great starting point. I’ve provided the CNET recommendations below:

Samsung PN58B650 58-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV User Review

All things considered I can’t really review the TV so the rating stars are a bit misleading. I ordered this TV previously owned at a great price from the Amazon Warehouse and when it showed up, as everyone fears may happen, the screen was cracked during shipping. So why am I giving a good review?

Well, first off Amazon support was great and the refund went very smooth. It took a couple of weeks due to the nature of the specialized shipping service necessary for an item that big but it didn’t cost me a thing.

Secondly, I was a little worried about buying a previously owned TV since the ad said it had “minor scratches on the Bezel, housing, [and etc]” but I have to say that the TV was clean. If it weren’t for the cracked screen, that I honestly believe happened during shipping, the TV looked brand new. I didn’t see a single scratch on it. When they say minimal they mean it.

Had they had any more in stock at the disgusting price I got it at (00) I would have re-bought it here in a heartbeat.

I know it is a bit like the saying, “aside from that Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?” and the whole transaction was a bit disappointing, but as far as Amazon is concerned – when things go bad they make good.
