Samsung PN63C550 63-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV (Black) User Review

We had been looking for a TV to replace the ‘08 Samsung LN52A650 52″ LCD which is a great TV that does everything exceptionally well *except* sports where there is noticeable blurring. Since plasmas have a 600 Hz refresh rate compared to 240HZ for the best LED/LCDs, we decided to go back to plasma.

I checked out some reviews and narrowed it down to about 10 TVs in the 60-65″ range and went to BB to look at them. They had the PN58C550 on display and it looked fantastic. I asked two different salesman what they thought of it. One said Samsung made the best plasmas and that plasmas offered the most realistic color. A different salesman said he just bought the PN63C550 and loved it. I asked him why and he said he’d been in the business for 17 years and he thought this was the best TV out there for the price.

I checked Consumer Reports and they rate the PN63C550 (along with the LG Infinia 60PK950) as the #1 TV of all plasmas and LED/LCDs with a score of 81. With that, we ordered it on a Fri and it was delivered the following Wed. The CEVA delivery was as promised. The box is huge as another reviewer said.

The picture is stunning right out of the box with no blurring during sports. The picture with a blu-ray player is equally impressive. I tried about 5 different blu-ray movies through it and can’t see any difference between this TV and our ‘08 LCD with blu-ray (which is a good thing). After watching about 8 hours of football on Sunday on this TV, it was barely warm on the front and at the vents in back…I would estimate 90 degrees. There is no buzzing at all on this TV, even with the volume muted and standing inches away from it. Standard def picture seems about the same as other HDTVs, nothing special.

Overall, I highly recommend this TV and would buy it again. I’ve also included a picture of the TV in the Customer Images section entitled “Picture with DirecTV.”

Samsung PN58B650 58-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV User Review

All things considered I can’t really review the TV so the rating stars are a bit misleading. I ordered this TV previously owned at a great price from the Amazon Warehouse and when it showed up, as everyone fears may happen, the screen was cracked during shipping. So why am I giving a good review?

Well, first off Amazon support was great and the refund went very smooth. It took a couple of weeks due to the nature of the specialized shipping service necessary for an item that big but it didn’t cost me a thing.

Secondly, I was a little worried about buying a previously owned TV since the ad said it had “minor scratches on the Bezel, housing, [and etc]” but I have to say that the TV was clean. If it weren’t for the cracked screen, that I honestly believe happened during shipping, the TV looked brand new. I didn’t see a single scratch on it. When they say minimal they mean it.

Had they had any more in stock at the disgusting price I got it at (00) I would have re-bought it here in a heartbeat.

I know it is a bit like the saying, “aside from that Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?” and the whole transaction was a bit disappointing, but as far as Amazon is concerned – when things go bad they make good.

Samsung UN46B8000 46-Inch 1080p 240Hz LED HDTV User Review

I just discovered this thing plays Divx files from a USB stick (see page 53 of the instructions for a full list of supported video codecs). It plays them full screen and the quality is very impressive considering the video files I was playing were only 640 x 480. Somehow this TV is able to scale by a factor of 3 and still maintain a crisp image.

I can’t say enough good about this TV. It’s quite striking when you see it in person. Thin and classy. The picture is amazing. It took a little bit of adjustment to make it what I was looking for, but now that it’s dialed in it’s beyond compare.
For the first couple of weeks, my wife and I were just shocked at how real some shows looked. It was as if you were in the room rather than watching a TV. We joked that some things were just too real.

This is my second Samsung DLP HDTV. I bought it in February, 2009 and still own it. The colors and resolution are better than the previous DLP that I owned (the earlier on was based on a color wheel, which after 5 years had to be replaced) – this one is LED based which (in theory) should last longer. I also own a Panasonic Plasma (50″) and have compared it with the Plasma side-by-side. The Plasma TV has more enhanced colors whereas the Samsung has more natural colors.
I usually watch sports or movies and have not seen any video lag – the close-up resolution is excellent. I do not use the speakers that are on the TV but have connected the TV to a Yamaha surround sound receiver using HDMI and audio cables – also have a Blu-Ray DVD player connected and even when I play regular DVDs they seem to be very sharp. I’m not sure if that is because of the Blu-Ray player or because of the TV.
What I like about the TV in addition to the above is that is light enough to be moved by one person. The delivery person was very good – he and his helper unpacked and placed the TV where I wanted it and did a basic test to see that everything was working.
When watching movies, either DVD based or from cable – the HD rendering is excellent – very sharp, blacks are blacks and with very natural colors.
All in all, I would strongly recommended this TV brand – my first Samsung DLP worked flawlessly for 5 years before I sold it and this one has worked flawlessly since I bought it in Feb of this year – the build quality rivals that of the other prestigious Japanese brands with a price that is a fraction of what you will pay for similar plasma or LCD TVs.

Great picture, great price from Amazon and delivery was right on time as well. Sound is great. I have not check out the Ethernet or wireless capabilities yet, but all else is great. I have already gotten compliments on the picture and resolution, even those who have 40″ Samsungs, but not this model.

When I try out everything I will truly know what I got, but I don’t explect any trouble since I have another 24″ Samsung in my computer room and it works great as well with everything working on it.

Samsung LN40B630 40-Inch 1080p 120 Hz LCD HDTV with Red Touch of Color User Review

I found this TV locally on clearance for 9 so the retailer could make room for the new 2010 model LN40C630. Even at Amazon’s reasonable price, I think this TV is a much better value over TV’s several hundred dollars less – a cheap piece of junk is still junk in the end, no matter what. You’re better off banking that money in savings until it accrues enough interest to make up the difference between the models!

This TV has two sets of component inputs, which makes it more legacy compatible for those of us that can’t afford the latest gear, and the upscaling processing I think is really nice. Closeup comparisons of my Xbox 360 running over component show that the TV’s upscaler provides a sharper picture than running the Xbox at 1080p directly.

I spent about an hour in the store subjectively comparing this TV to a Toshiba model and a Panasonic model flanking them that both had decent reviews, and every time I’d change a setting, I ended up liking the picture on the Samsung more than any other model. Even if the panels in the sets are identical as my salesman claimed they were (so why not buy the cheaper one!), Samsung’s image processor seems to have a lot more refinement than other less expensive brands, and I think that it really justifies the slightly additional cost of this TV. There is more color and detail subtlety viewable in the image on this Samsung than in its competing TV’s, and the color is better and more naturally represented, even in the (tacky and over-bright) Dynamic mode.

The same retailer had a LN40C650, which has more features than the 630 model TV. I have a PC hooked to this TV as well and so fancy internet features hold no interest for me, but moreover the 650 models have a glossier screen which I actually do NOT prefer over the semi-matte finish of the 630. If I am trying to watch the TV in any type of light, the glossy screen increases reflections significantly, and I would rather take a minimal hit on the real-world-unattainable contrast ratio instead of hating my TV every sunny Saturday afternoon.

If you are not going to calibrate the TV, I’d recommend setting it in Natural mode. It was too dim viewing in the store, but most retailers have lights that are exactly one hojillion times brighter than in your home. If you view especially in the evening or in dim rooms, the brightness level is set very good by default in this mode, and I (subjectively) feel that the color balance is the most realistic. Rendered content doesn’t ‘pop’ as much without the oversaturation, but isn’t bleeding color problems the reason I got rid of my old CRT in the first place?

With regard to Digital Noise Reduction, the 120Hz processing, and other features: I do not see a huge difference, personally. None of the content that I have viewed so far on my TV has shown me much different sitting 11 feet away. My suggestion is to play with every setting, and find the viewing preferences that suit you. Each persons preferred content will play a role in what settings are best, so I will not suggest any. Just know that you can always say “Reset Picture” and start over if you muck them up too badly!

Samsung UN40C6500 40-Inch 1080p 120 Hz LED HDTV (Black) User Review

My 40″ Samsung LED HDTV (UN40C6500) has a great picture, but is not compatible with Macintosh computers. Maybe one day it will be, “when Apple lets them in.” But until then, if you want to connect your MacBook Pro laptop, to this TV, using one of the HDMI inputs, to create a DROP-DEAD-GEORGEOUS monitor, FORGET IT! For now, to use as a monitor, you’re limited to using Apple’s DVI to Video adapter, with a COMPOSITE or S-Video cable, which is just above the VGA-quality range (I think). And if you want to upgrade the firmware on the TV, find a friend with a Windows computer to download the file onto a USB drive for you.

I ordered a bunch of cables from Amazon, including a DVI to HDMI adaptor. I’ve been spinning my wheels for 2 weeks. I spent 1 1/2 hours on Samsung’s live Tech CHAT yesterday, and called their higher level TEIR 2 Customer Support today. The Customer support lady solved my problem rather quickly, responding to my problem with: Samsung TV’s aren’t compatible with Apple. Maybe one day they will be, when they let us in. Until then, it’s ‘Windows Only.’ (That was strange, since I’ve read forum posts from successful MBP users (although some were glad to get any picture at all, and were moving up from a tube TV). Maybe it was my 15″ laptop; maybe she took care of a lot of future calls today, with one brush stroke.)

I was teased with all the extras I read about in the Samsung Instruction Manual (part of doing homework before such a big purchase). The instruction Manual showed where to connect a Mac computer (it would always connect to HDMI1– I tried that first).
You can still connect your Ethernet cable to it, or the Wi-Fi Adaptor-Dongle, for the Samsung apps. You might also be able to share computer content via Ethernet & Wi-Fi. I’m not quite sure. I’m brain-dead at the moment.

Oh, well, I’m sure of one thing. If you ever get up-tight, stressed-out, and have reached your limit because of all this techie stuff spinning around in your head and making absolutely no sense — before you smash something expensive, or say something hateful/stupid to someone near & dear to you, remember, you can always use this Samsung as a TELEVISION, and you know, kick back & watch TV. It is a very, very nice TV.

The Samsung HDTV 550 is the best TV I could have purchased. It has a marvelous picture, sound, color, crispness, and is easy to use.
I would buy one for every room in the house; however, we have different sizes in our tv’s. When it comes time to replace our other televisions, we will
buy Samsung. Samsung is a great brand name. I had a small Samsung TV that lasted over 25 years.
