I waited about 10 months to post my opinion of this TV. Like some other folks here, I bought it at 6th Avenue Electronics. I went into the store with cash for a similar, but much more expensive Sony unit. The sales person told me to first look at some Pannasonic plasma they had on sale, which I didn’t think looked great, and then he showed me this TV. It was sitting in a row of Samsung and Sony TVs, and out of the 10 or so in the row, this TV clearly looked the best. The color looked very rich and vibrant. Then he told me the price, which was 700 bucks cheaper than the Sony I was going to buy.

I refuse to buy anything this big without reading reviews, so I went home and did some research. Worst things I saw were some cases of faulty audio, and a lack of internet hookup. I decided to go with it….I have a 27 inch monitor for my pc…I really didn’t need internet hookup on my TV. Even better, Amazon had it on sale, and when I went back to 6th Avenue, they matched the price! I felt like a winner at this point…. 900 bucks cheaper than the Sony, and it honestly looked better than the Sony in the store.

10 months later, this TV is incredible. I have both the PS3 and 360, both hooked up via hdmi ports, and they look stunning. I watched Saving Private Ryan on it last weekend, and was just amazed. And this is 10 months into owning it!!!!! High Def TV looks amazing, and even regular cable looks alright also. And, I have no sound issues at all.

This TV is one of the best budget purchases I have ever made in my life. I may buy another for my basement! The most rewarding part was when I helped my buddy hang his 00.00 Samsung half inch thin LED TV, and then hear him say “Dude, your TV looks better than mine.”

Toshiba REGZA Cinema Series 46XV545U 46-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV User Review

We bought this [46"] TV from a big box store in June. We were looking at plasmas, but the reflection problem was a show-stopper for our family room. The Toshiba has no reflection problem day or night. The picture is beautiful. You’ll wonder how you lived with your CRT. No jaggies from the usual sources, though some from some 24p movies. Color balance was perfect on delivery; we haven’t played with it. We watch from 10-15 feet away, but the picture is clear and bright from 20 feet. Watching from the side.. 45 degrees, there is no distortion. The images are very good in the daytime and awesome at night with the lights turned down. We ultimately bought the 46″ size, but in hindsight, I think the larger version (52″?) would have been better, tho more expensive.

The Toshiba has half a dozen aspect ratio options, all available on the remote. We found to our dismay, that a lot of cable/broadcast TV, while digital, is still in the conventional 4:3 format; essentially a square picture with black bars on the side. Forcing it into a wide screen display distorted the images, so we mostly watch channels that broadcast in HD widescreen.

The multi-function remote is complex, but once you get used to it, the necessary controls are easy to manipulate via an on-screen display. It’s also lit, which is very helpful at night, when the lights are off. There is also a limited set of controls on the TV itself in case the remote conks out. We weren’t looking for that, but it was nice to find.

It has more connections than you’ll likely need including multiple HDMI, component, composite, PC, even a USB slot. We have cable coming into the component (Y, Pb, Pr) connection, DVD/Blu-ray through S-video, and PS3 through conventional composite connections. The Toshiba has its own digital audio out connection (Dolby), but there are lots of ways to hook up an external audio source. It sits pretty low on its own stand, so you don’t see the cables coming out of the back.

The Toshiba has its own sort of 3d/stero sound system, so audio sounds like it’s coming from the side, even though the speakers are just on the bottom. A nice touch — hard to appreciate looking at the specs.

Some of the reviews mentioned that the shiny frame was a drawback. We found no problem from the frame. It’s pretty narrow, anyway. Reviews also warned that store displays would have the brightness turned up, but we didn’t find the image much different when we got it home. The Toshiba name on the bottom is lit, but it dims depending on the light in the room.

It’s an excellent unit. It seemed when we were looking, that each brand/model TV had some sort of limitation in one of the specs, usually in the number or type of connections; or it was too expensive. There are no limitations on the Toshiba and it’s a great price.

the Good:

This is my second Home DVD recorder and I experienced no bugs in the operation of the Toshiba. The price at 140 is excellent for this quality. It reads any dvd from any recorder I’ve tried, including several which won’t read on other players and recorders. It has excellent flexibility in editing, including a way to cut out unwanted segments of your program. I have a 47″ HDTV and the HDMI output is excellent in HD modes, this recorder does a good job of upconverting.

the Bad:

The title editing is a little lame and time consuming, though it works correctly. The remote control is all black and complex, making it hard to find the correct buttons sometimes. Different discs DVD-R, DVD+R, and DVD+RW are strangely limited in the menu choices for recording, depending on which type of disc you are using. The DVD-RW has full functionality in the menu. I don’t know if it is just the DR400 or if others have these limitations. PCs don’t. My old ILO DVD Recorder didn’t have the functionality to begin with. Read the manual to see what I’m talking about.

Overall:

The best Home Entertainment DVD recorder I’ve seen rivaling a PC in functionality, except for speed and software. I think this product is sold out and I’m glad I got a new one.

Which Size HDTV is Right for My Room?

With standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches. With HDTV, the resolution is so much better that you can sit closer to a larger TV without noticing the pixels. So with HDTVs, the rule tends to be you can sit anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times the screen size (in inches) for the best experience. If you know the size of the room you have already, where you want to sit, and where your new HDTV should go once you get it, you can figure out the size HDTV you should get. Minimum size = Viewing distance/3 Maximum size=Viewing distance/1.5

 

Toshiba 37E200U 37-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV (Black Gloss) User Review

Bought this unit primarily for a computer monitor. I am very pleased with the size and clarity from 10 feet away. I like watching and reading news items on the pc and this unit makes it most pleasant with tri-focal glasses. I had a 15 inch tube monitor and found my eyes tiring after a short time. The 37 inch size makes viewing very comfortable.

I bought this at a store after reading all the Amazon reviews on various monitor/tv units. It has so many inputs that were new to me that I felt that telling the seller what I needed it for was the only way to get my money worth.

This is what I wanted in a unit:
A PC monitor
Connect my Roku ( Netflix ) HD wireless converter
Tv channel viewing
Connect my analog vcr
get rid of my external pc speakers

These desires were met and by buying a wireless keyboard and mouse I now have the pc box under the TV and out of sight.

The monitor has a matte finish and does not reflect glare from my windows during the day. This might be the feature I most appreciate.

Set-up was very easy.

I looked at the unit from 30 feet away at an angle and was able to see the picture just fine. What angle I look at in my living room is not an issue. This is an LCD screen.

It has 1080 resolution and Netflix delivers at 780 so I can upgrade my Roku and still be pleased with my unit.

It has 5 settings for picture warmth ( color/hue/gamma/etc ). 4 of these settings are factory set and non-changeable and the 5th for personal preference.

I use an outdoor digital antenna and as I change channels the Toshiba indicates the strength of the signal. The unit does not have an antenna built in. You must use a cable style antenna or cable service.

My analog vcr is now useless for recording without a digital converter box and can’t record shows without a converter. Also my previously recorded vcr tapes come on the TV in 480 resolution.

It will accept a USB flash device. If you have mp3 or jpg files or want to view the pictures from your camera ( camera cable required with rgb or usb external connection ) you can have a slide show.

The HDMI inputs look very similar to a usb connection but the shape is different. All the newer pc’s and other devices are coming with this commection. It replaces the s-cable style connector it does not accept s-cable.

I had to buy an HDI cable ( connect my Roku ), a stereo speaker cable ( from the pc headphones to the monitor ) with both ends male, and a VGA cable ( computer ) in addition to the unit itself. You can get these from Amazon.

It will not play avi files from a usb flash unit. You need the computer for that viewing.

I’ve been researching and saving for this TV for a long time. This TV by far was the best value for my money. I’ve looked at LG, Samsung, Sony, and a few others. I must say that so far I have found nothing to say that is bad about the Toshiba. If anything that I’ve learned so far is that all of the big name brand flat screens are the same. It really boils down to how much money you are willing to spend for the TV. I haven’t been able to really play with the color settings yet and haven’t been able to fully use the 1080p settings yet. DirecTV has screwed up my service since moving and they haven’t solved the problem since I’m paying for HD service and I’m not getting it. I’ve got a feeling that I’m going to dump DirecTV when my contract is up with them and get a package deal from Verizon since I’ve got FiOS internet at my house. The only time that I’ve use the 1080p setting is on my Xbox 360 and so far it has a better picture on my TV then my Brother-in-laws HDTV. Overall, it’s a great TV that I haven’t regretting purchasing.
