My Sony 52W5150 is a thing of beauty! The pictures are fabulous and it looks great in the living room also. My old 60 Hz Sharp 46 inch cannot compare to this TV in terms of deep blacks and motion picture quality.

First, the pictures are amazing! The blacks are so ridiculously black… my biggest pet peeve on a HDTV is the greyish black when there’s supposed to be a black background on some older TV’s. You don’t have that problem with this TV. This TV has Bravia Engine 3 (Sony’s latest video processor) and has a 120 Hz refresh rate. Inbetween those two, the motion judder that I used to see on my old Sharp TV during fast action scenes in movies or sports are gone. All I see is smoothe motion which is a thing of beauty. Once you turn off the “Vivid” colors mode, the colors look real and true to life. I just love it. In fact, my wife told me how she noticed for the first time all the intricate details of the makeup on the TV news anchors’ faces. That’s high picture quality.

Second, it looks great in the room. I love the Sony light that comes on on the bottom center of the bezel when the TV is on. (In fairness, my wife hates it so be aware that all or most late model Sony HDTV’s have this feature) And it looks great whether it’s on or not… showing the deep blacks and the rich colors. It really does become the center of your family/living room entertainment. Some prefer the touch of color from Samsung… I prefer the all black look of my TV.

Finally, comparing the specs on this TV versus the top of the line Sony XBR9, there wasn’t enough difference to pay the extra 0 premium. Both TV’s have the same contrast ratios (3,800 native, 100,000 dynamic). For novices, the contrast ratio is a rough ratio of the brightness of the darkest color the TV is capable of versus the brightest color. So the higher the number, the more capable the TV is in terms of reproducing a wide range of colors at a wide range of brightness. They also look very similar, both use the latest Bravia 3 Engine video processor to produce their pictures, have the same # of HD ports, and allow for widgets & broadband access to Internet.

The three major differences are the following: 1) 120 Hz vs. 240 Hz refresh rate, 2) 8 bit versus 10 bit panel, and 3) of course the 0 or so in price premium. Frankly, my research into 120 Hz vs. 240 Hz refresh rates lead me to conclusion that most people can’t really notice the difference. People can notice the difference between 120 Hz and 60 Hz (as I pointed out earlier), but the 120 vs. 240 seems much more marginal. I am not such a videophile that I will pay a serious premium for a marginal difference. Then the 8 bit vs. the 10 bit panel is an even more dubious distinction. 8 bit panels allow for 17 million colors… the 10 bit panels allow a billion in theory…. But you don’t really need it. That’s because no content source available right now (not blue ray, not HD broadcast, HD cable/satellite) can differentiate colors to that degree and no LCD panel can reproduce that many colors at once. My advice is – save your money and buy the 10 bit panels when the content actually catches up. Buying 10 bit panel right now could be like buying a 50 inch plasma TV in 2000 for like K when no real HD content sources were available to take advantage of the big screen & TV capability.

The only thing this TV does not have is LED backlighting. This TV and the XBR9 are Sony’s best CCFL backlit LCD TV’s. Now the latest TV’s have started to use LED backlighting technology to really hike up the contrast ratio to 1 million to 1 and beyond. Sony’s latest release XBR10 does this as do the Samsung B6000, B7000, B8000, and B8500 series TV’s. Those TV’s are fabulous TV’s, and they look so cool with their super thin form factor (Samsung’s are 1.2 inches thick!). But I am not prepared to pay double or even triple the cost of my W series to get a similar sized LED backlit LCD TV just yet. Wait 3 years and the prices will be MUCH cheaper, since by then larger screen true LED TV’s called OLED (not the LCD with LED backlighting TV’s that are available now) will probably be more widely available.

By the way, the Samsung TV most comparable to this TV is the Samsung 52B650. Both are 120 Hz, near top of line TV’s with CCFL backlighting. I could have gone with either, but I ended up going with this TV because I got a great deal on it and because my sound system and blue ray player (PS3) are Sony products – hello Bravia Synch. Some do think the picture quality on the Samsung is slightly better… but I found the differences to be virtually indiscernable to my eyes. Can’t go wrong with either as Samsung and Sony are, IMO, the two greatest LCD TV makers right now… but Samsung seems to be pulling ahead lately.

Overall, fabulous TV… well worth the costs. One of the best top tier, large screen size TV’s available with CCFL backlighting. LED backlighting is better, but it costs over double. So for non-early adopters, this is the way to go.

Panasonic TC P46G15 – 46″ plasma TV – widescreen – 1080p (FullHD) – HDTV User Review

Purchased this plasma TV in early January. It was a “close-out” model still in box at a local big box retailer. I bought the last one in the store. We recently moved and my huge 65″ projection TV was not going to fit into our new living room, so we needed a flat screen to mount on the wall next to the fireplace. I was undecided between an LCD or plasma, but decided on the latter due to the claim of a better viewing angle. The tv is mounted in a corner, and is watched from the living room, dining room and sometimes the kitchen, so a good viewing angle was crucial. I’ve had this tv for over a month now & we absolutely love it! The picture is so beautiful no matter what the source we’re playing. Standard def is clear and of course, HD is amazing! The sound from the TV isn’t as bad as I thought it would be after reading other reviews. Digital quality sound thru HDMI & the TV’s speakers is crisp and clear. We did end up buying a AV receiver to hook up to the TV but that was more for music purposes. I could have easily used and been happy with the tv’s built-in speakers. The viewing angle is very good, which is why we chose this model in the first place. A couple negatives about this TV to be aware of: 1) there is a glare off of the screen if watching in a sunny room. One entire wall in our living room is a window that is currently not covered by curtains or anything, so the room gets plenty of sunlight during the day. At certain times of the day, the picture on the TV is nearly washed out due to the glare from the screen, but we plan to install a curtain on that wall sometime soon so this should resolve that issue. In addition, our TV watching during the day is not too often, so this minor annoyance is tolerable for us. I had read that due to the glass screen, plasmas do give off more glare than LCDs, so I knew this going in. Not going to ‘ding’ a product for something I already expected. This was a trade-off I was willing to make for the better viewing angle. I have never owned an LCD flat screen so cannot compare the anti-glare claim on those TVs. 2) This TV is difficult to keep clean since dust shows up like crazy on the black casing, but again, this is a minor complaint for me. Only takes a minute or two to swipe it clean. My boyfriend, who did not want a new TV, actually commented on my good decision to buy this one. And all of our friends who were thinking of going the LCD route have changed their minds to going plasma, or this exact same TV. I think that’s the best testament of all! All in all VERY pleased with this model and its performance. Can’t imagine someone experiencing television on this set and not enjoying it!!!

Sharp LC 42SB45U – 42″ LCD TV – widescreen – 1080p (FullHD) – HDTV – black User Review

Picture is great even without HD. Use S-Video from cable box to TV for a REALLY NICE picture if you don’t have HD. I am satisfied with the set, but it has 2 issues (not deal breakers, though). First, the sound is poor. I can hear it fine, but it doesn’t knock my socks off. I expected to need to add speakers anyway. A lot of these LCDs, regardless of price, have poor sound. Second, no matter how you connect your PC to this thing the resolution doesn’t accomodate the screen. In other words, it’s not displaying a true 1920 x 1080 resolution. Text looks horrible through HDMI but GREAT through VGA. It’s the opposite through VGA where TEXT looks great and video quality is poor. I’ll suck it up because everything else about the LCD is FANTASTIC. I’ll switch to HD cable when we move this spring.

There was, and still is, something about the picture that made me chose this unit. Nothing was too dark or oversaturated. I like the simple design. The remote is small and simple, but it has a great selection of quick buttons (ClosedCaption, Picture presets and such). The TV that this unit is replacing is a 27 inch flat panel brick, also by SHARP. That set still works great. I wanted it to give me reason to get a new one but it still works as well as it did when I bought it 8 years ago.

VIZIO VL370M – 37″ LCD TV – widescreen – 1080p (FullHD) – HDTV User Review

We decided to upgrade to an HDTV to prepare for using a Mac Mini as a media center (and drop the cable!) Of course, to make that work well, we needed a high-resolution display, so we decided to look only at 1080p-capable screens. Out living room is pretty small, so a 37″ seemed adequate.

We were primarily looking at Samsung and Sony models, when my wife spotted this at Costco for under 0. I wasn’t all that familiar with Vizio products, but I am a bit leery of smaller manufacturers. However, the picture looked good, and what I read gave me hope, so we went ahead and bought one.

I’m very happy with it so far. It has a good suite of inputs: 3 HDMI (2 rear/1 side), 2 component (1 rear/1 side), 2 composite (1 rear/1 side), 1 S-video (rear), 1 cable/antenna (rear), and a VGA (rear). I’ve tried the HDMI, component, and composite inputs, and all of them display very nicely on the screen. We don’t actually have the computer connected yet, so I can’t confirm how well it works, but I suspect it will be just fine.

We have most of the audio from our various devices going through a surround receiver, so I’ve only been using the TV speakers for the Wii. It’s just a touch tinny–more than adequate, really, but not the same quality as the picture. However, since that’s not a big issue for us, I don’t hold it against the Vizio.

A nice additional benefit is that it is quite energy-efficient for a non-LED backlight; it uses about 110 watts. The remote is well laid out, and the on-screen menus (input selection and picture adjustment) are perfectly acceptable. It’s got a 60Hz refresh rate. I don’t have a lot of experience with 120Hz displays, but we haven’t had a lot of problem with motion artifact with this set.

Highly recommended as a very nice TV for such a good price.

Sony KDL-40V4150 – 40″ BRAVIA LCD TV – widescreen – 1080p (FullHD) – HDTV – gloss piano black User Review

I bought this TV at B&H Photo for less than the S-series available at Walmart and V-series has a lot more features and capabilities than the S-series product. I am very pleased with the picture quality, sound and various features. I have watched a few fast-action movies have noticed no blurring as reported for other brands of 60Hz TV. I am also surprised that the digital out (optical) from TV connected to my audio receiver not only carries the digital sounds from DVD players, DirectV receiver, and rooftop antenna but also it appears that the analog sound from VCR is piped out of the optical digital output (I did not expect that at all). The 4-HDMI connections are more than plenty as I don’t expect to use more than 3 at the most (using only two at this time). Picture quality for SD TV is fine but HD is superb. It has the capability to adjust the backlight intensity with the lighting in the room. Oh, the most pleasing thing…I have windows facing the TV (right behind me) and even with a bright sun, I don’t see any glare on the screen (of course the shiny frame does have glare). It used to be a major problem with my old tube TV and I could not watch TV without my window shades drawn.

I love the TV guide feature for off-the-air channels (if picks up TV guide coded in the signal)…amazing. PAP/PIP work only if one of the inputs is cable/antenna…so, it is somewhat limited; but I have hardly used PAP/PIP in the two weeks of owning this TV.

There is one feature I wish it had: my 32″ Vizio has a “panoramic screen” option for SD channels. The panoramic screen leaves the center of the picture unchanged but stretches the content away from the center to fill the screen. Sony 4150 does not have that feature.

I still cannot figure out why this TV (4150) is cheaper than 4100 even though 4150 has longer warranty (18 months as compare to 12 months). People say that 4100 and 4150 are “quite” the same except the warranty length…but I don’t know what exactly are the differences (if any, apart from the warranty length).

Unfortunately, there is no description of 4150 model on the Sony website.

Overall, I am please to have spend 0 more than the the Phillips 42″ TV I was seriously considering at Walmart. Sony V4150 has a lot more features and definitely far better picture and sound.
