LG BD590 250GB HD Network Blu-ray Disc Player User Review

I purchased the Vizio blu-ray with built in networking first, and was so deeply disappointed in it that I returned it and bought this one instead. The difference in the quality of implementation is striking, I would rate this unit with 5 stars, whereas the Vizio one is between one and two stars.

I had to set up the wireless networking once, and have never had to worry about it again. When I do something that uses the wireless networking it just works. This is what I’m used to with my networking devices, and what I would expect any halfway decent player to do.

One of the first things I did after setting up the wireless networking was to have the system update itself. A couple of button clicks later and the device happily downloaded and installed the latest firmware.

So far I’ve used the Netflix service a lot on it, and played a bunch of discs. Everything I’ve tried has been smooth and easy, though I have not tried the Vudu or MLB apps.

The unit is hooked up to a 1080P 50″ plasma, and the picture is quite sharp and fast.

Philips DVP5982 1080p Upscaling DVD Player User Review

We have been impressed with this Samsung Upscaling DVD. Some of the other reviews his it on the head, the remote is a bit wussy; but does everything it needs to do. I still haven’t been able to get my master remote to run it to consolidate, but the improvement on picture quality is great and ease of use through HDMI made it a perfect match for my Sony surround sound. Only downsides that I’ve had from it in the past two years from it is the time it takes to activate and read discs, and sometimes the picture will come through with no sound (but that could be my surround sound too). Regardless, with patients and disconnecting the HDMI cable from time to time, this has been a heck of a buy.

I am writing this short “review”–let’s call it a Public Service Announcement–so you can make your Philips DVP5990 DVD player Region-Free. This works with either suffix (DVP5990/F7 or DVP5990/37) and probably any other variation; perhaps these denote what retail channel the box was sold through, or maybe it is simply a firmware reference. In any case, I will not elaborate on the technical aspects of this model, other than to say it is already a great value for the fifty to sixty dollars it usually sells for. I also cannot speak to the virtues of any particular vendor here, but whatever you do, DO NOT pay a premium to some company for a “Region-Free” DVP5990, because all they will be doing is what I tell you below. (Or, as at least one person has reported, you might pay more simply to get a piece of paper with the same instructions to do it yourself!)

This unit is HDMI-compatible and even includes a USB port on the front panel. It also plays just about everything and that’s even before you make it region-free. Although the manufacturer will not admit it, the hardware in these DVD players is manufactured to play all regions, and a (very flimsy) layer of protection is then added depending on where the product will be sold. USA = Region 1, Europe = Region 2, etc.

Many DVD players can be easily returned to the default Region 0 (= PLAY ALL) setting simply by entering a hidden code on the remote, and this DVP5990 is no exception. I will make it super easy for you below. Make sure the DVD tray is empty before you start. And obviously you will need a non-Region 1 DVD to actually test that it works in the end.

(Step 0: Turn on the DVD player but make sure the tray is empty, i.e., don’t put a disc in.)
1. Press “Setup” on the remote.
2. Using the right arrow (”>”) on the remote, move over to “Preference Page”. You do not need to push “OK”.
(Please note that if a disc is in, you will not be allowed to access the the “Preference” menu.)
3. Press 1,3,8,9,3,1 in that exact order on remote. (Again, you do not need to push “OK”.)
4. Region Code screen will be displayed. (It will almost certainly show Region 1, unless someone has already made the change for you.) Press the up arrow (”^”) once to select “0″.
5. Press “Setup” on the remote.

I suggest to repeat Steps 1 through 3 to confirm region setting.

Congratulations, you now have a region-free player as it was designed in the Philips factory! You can now play discs from around the world, many of which are cheaper or quite simply available for sale when other versions are not. Wouldn’t it be nice if everything in life were this easy?

Yamaha DVD-S1800BL 1080p Upconverting DVD SACD Player User Review

I purchased this player to take the load off a constantly used Pioneer DVD recorder/player, on a recommendation from a friend, during the low price sale. He needed a new cd player and this had the high end da audio components he wanted, and the super reduced price, I figured it was worth the risk.
The machine itself is solid and well built and lives up to the clean sound quality he raved about, and the picture quality is excellent, too… my only gripe is it is picky with certain discs. Some play through, with no problem, but others cause a list of glitches from pixels to machine freezes. I expect that from Sony, for they are the finickeyist players out there,(and their quality has dropped tremendously) but not Yamaha- especially in the original price tag class. If I paid the original price, I would have returned it, but because when it isn’t being picky, it’s great and I couldn’t touch another player with the sale price.
It used to be said that you get what you paid for, but now pretty much everything is overpriced and built questionably, so we don’t know… I hope these companies read our reviews to understand where we are coming from, that would be nice.
So, blah, blah, blah… Original price 249.00- NO… under 100.00- YES.

Product Info screen provides you with the information on this unit’s hardware and software version information. You can download the latest firmware from their website in a zip file. Then burn a CD with the BIN file to load into the blu-ray player to install the update. No network connection was required to the blu-ray player. This unit came with the latest Version 1.008 already installed. Sony and Panasonic do their updates directly off the network.

Pioneer Dv410vk – All Multi Region – 1080p Upconverting DVD Player User Review

Pioneer doesn’t officially make an all-region version of this player, so what you get depends on who did the custom modification and using what (hardware/software). My suggestion to other potential buyers is to ask a potential seller serious questions and guarantee of refund if not as described before hitting any button to buy. If no guarantee, don’t buy it or you may regret later.

This machine flawlessly plays any DVD I have bought from anywhere (US, Europe, Asia etc). Digital video via HDMI is as good as my Sony blu-ray player when playing regular DVDs. Digital audio via HDMI or coaxial out is second to none although this unit doesn’t have the optical digital audio output that my Sony has. However, the Sony can NOT play Regions 2 to 6 and/or PAL DVDs from other countries.

The Pioneer arrived with a plug adapter (not expected but thrilled to receive it.) At first I thought I would also have to buy a power converter but a quick email to the merchant and a very quick reply from them said I didn’t need one. This was truly a plug and play system. I now am watching my Region 2 DVDs – and I am so happy! I also purchased an HDMI cable (Cat 2) from an Amazon merchant for under and that is how I have my Pioneer connected to my Samsung 630. This really opens up my DVD world to include international movies. Just one note: The instructions that came with the Pioneer said to go to page 36 for details to change the player to NTSC – it was actually page 43 in my manual. Not a real issue – I figured it out.
